More Encouragement Needed On Graduate Engineering Jobs

16 Jun 2010

More Encouragement Needed On Graduate Engineering Jobs Last week saw various sources stressing the importance of promoting graduate engineering jobs and engineering in general as a worthy discipline.

Separately reported in the Recruiter were quotes from BAE Systems, Transport for London (TfL), Talascend and Network Rail - all of which placed importance on the benefits of studying engineering in order to land a graduate job.

Adrian Thomas of Network Rail urged recruitment agencies to encourage more young people - and girls in particular - to enter into a career in the engineering field. Thomas, head of resourcing at Britain’s rail infrastructure company said that now was a good time to promote the industry and hopefully get more people into graduate engineering jobs in the future.

These sentiments were echoed by managing director Russell Dalglish at resourcing solutions firm Talascend. Dalglish said that not enough young people had been entering engineering in the last 20 years and that has led to a shortfall in the talent required to fill graduate engineering jobs.

BAE Systems also urged the government to step up their efforts to promote Engineering along with Science, Technology and Maths. Speaking to the Recruiter about these STEM subjects, BAE Systems’ Richard Hamer said that, “recent evidence has shown small improvements in the numbers studying STEM subjects at A level and we hope this will see more people studying engineering at university.”

Finally, the encouragement on engineering from BAE, Talascend and Network Rail was also backed up by Transport for London’s recruitment delivery manager Alan McKinnon who said that demand for students to fill graduate engineering jobs would exceed supply for the next five years at least.
