Anyone searching for graduate jobs in London in the financial sector will be very happy to hear that recent recruitment figures show a surge in the number of financial sector jobs on offer in the City.
The research, commissioned by Powerchex, a pre-employment screening company for the financial services sector, showed substantial improvements in finance job numbers in London – both on a monthly and annual basis. The number of financial jobs in London offered in April 2010 increased by 12% on March 2010 and 87% on last April.
The annual increase of 87% contained an increase of at least 25% across all of the 6 sectors measured in the report. Insurance and hedge fund jobs were both up by well over 100% and investment banks jobs rose in excess of 200%. Hedge fund jobs are currently driving the monthly pace of job offers, rising 93% from March to April this year. That simply has to be great news for financial and other graduate jobs in London.
Alexandra Kelly, a director at Powerchex, said: “The figures show an amazing improvement, that things have been getting steadily better since the beginning of 2009. However, we are comparing this to the very depths of the recession, and recruitment activity still has a little way to go to match its prerecession levels. This really is a phenomenon specific to the city of London, and financial services in particular.”
Kelly believes that the growth in finance jobs in London so far in 2010 would have been even stronger if there hadn’t been a looming general election in May. And it is hoped that the resurgent finance sector will spread to other sectors and drive job growth more generally too.
