More Graduate Jobs On Offer Than Last Year

More Graduate Jobs On Offer Than Last Year There are further signs that the number of graduate jobs in various sectors will be higher this year than they were in 2009.

The director of the Careers Group at London University, Anne-Marie Martin, was quoted last week in The Independent as saying that all sectors are still recruiting. Martin also said: "It's true to say that numbers are certainly lower than they were two years ago," she says, "but they are certainly more than they were last year."

Martin made the point, however, that graduates might have to relax some of their job hunt criteria in order to find a graduate position. For example, she suggested that it might be necessary for you to look for a vacancy in Uxbridge rather than a graduate job in London.

Also, the Association of Graduate Recruiters recent figures showed that graduate job vacancies in 2009 dropped by just 8.9 per cent as opposed to the 25 per cent that was forecast. Also encouragingly, the report found that over half of companies expect to have more graduate vacancies available than they did last year.

The Independent also reported that two-thirds of IT companies surveyed by Modis International were forecasting growth in the next few months. Jim Albert, the managing director of Modis International said, "We're seeing an increased appetite among employers for graduates for the first time in three years and the focus is on graduates with energy, a great work ethic and long-term potential."
