good news for part time jobs – minimum wage increase

Good News For Part Time Jobs – Minimum Wage Increase Anyone looking for part time jobs will be glad to hear that the national minimum wage levels will be increased as of 1 October this year.

Once the new national minimum wage levels come into effect, 16 and 17 year olds will get at least £3.64, 18 to 20 year olds £4.92 and over 21s will now receive a minimum of £5.93 an hour. That all equates to around a 2% pay rise for anyone currently on the minimum wage in a part time position.

The new rates, which also apply to full time jobs as well as part time jobs, were announced in the Chancellor’s Budget Speech last week. The rises come after ministers agreed with the Low Pay Commission that minimum wage levels should be increased. The Commission also helped to get a £2.50 an hour minimum wage for apprentices. David Norgrove, chairman of the Low Pay Commission said that the new apprentice rate was ‘an important extension to minimum wage protection across the UK.’ Norgrove added that they had balanced the needs of people working in full and part time jobs against the challenges that businesses were still facing.

Business Minister Pat McFadden echoed those lingering worries about the wider economy, saying the, "recommendations provide a welcome increase for workers, but the economy is still fragile and government must continue to support the recovery in the months ahead.”

McFadden stressed, however, that since the introduction of the national minimum wage, millions of people in low paid full or part time jobs had benefited by seeing extra money in their pay packets.

If these increases to the national minimum wage have given you more reason to find a part time job then please check out all our very last holiday and part time vacancies to see if you can find an opening to suit you.
