T J Hughes, the discount retailer, is creating over 150 jobs in Belfast this month. The Belfast jobs consist of 16 full time positions and 137 part time jobs.
Although T J Hughes currently has over 50 stores around the UK, it has never opened an outlet in Northern Ireland. The retailer started out almost a hundred years ago with one shop in Liverpool. The new T J Hughes store at the Cityside retail park at Yorkgate in north Belfast will become the company’s first outlet in Northern Ireland.
T J Hughes has invested over £1.5m in the new location and is now looking to fill the full and part time jobs in Belfast that will be created when the store opens its doors on March 24.
Chief executive of TJ Hughes, Sue Tennant, said that, “We are keen for the Northern Ireland shopper to see the store at first hand as it will be like any other discount store they are familiar with. We are delighted to be launching into Northern Ireland and we believe that the TJ Hughes offering will be a huge success.”
And, the Democratic Unionist Party MP for North Belfast, Nigel Dodds also welcomed the announcement: “This is tremendous news for north Belfast, bringing over 150 new jobs and an investment of £1.6m. It will provide a much welcomed jobs boost and be a catalyst for even more shopper interest in the area. This represents another vote of confidence in the Northern Ireland retail market and is a positive sign of economic recovery.”
