Today, the government’s Young Person’s Guarantee came into force and should bring hope to many young people who are looking for full or part time jobs. As many as 100 thousand out of work 18 to 24 year olds are expected to receive immediate help from the scheme.
Under the Young Person’s Guarantee, any young person who has been unemployed for six months will be given either a full or part time job, work experience or training. The scheme will create 470 thousand openings over the next 15 months for young people all over the UK.
Young people will be given various options to improve their job prospects including work-focused training, self-employment aid, further support when applying for existing permanent and part time jobs in key industries and will be eligible to apply for any new jobs via the Future Jobs Fund. In addition, there will be further help, for both graduates and non-graduates alike, with finding suitable internships.
Gordon Brown has said that the government do not want another lost generation like the one in the 1980s. And, ministers have been asking businesses to help them by creating even more full and part time jobs and work experience opportunities as the economy creeps out of the recession.
The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Yvette Cooper said that it was important that these initiatives continue and that further investment in the nation’s youth is made. Cooper said: "We want to guarantee every young person the right support. That’s why this guarantee is starting now, as the school leavers and graduates of last summer who couldn’t find work because of the recession start to approach six months unemployment."
