Wind Farms To Create Thousands Of Permanent & Temporary Jobs

12 Jan 2010

Wind Farms To Create Thousands Of Permanent & Temporary Jobs The government has announced that thousand of permanent and temporary jobs will be created by plans for a huge increase in the number of offshore wind farms around the UK.

£100bn is being invested by the government to develop nine sites consisting of 6,400 wind turbines in the next ten years. It expected that up to 70,000 permanent or temporary jobs will be created over the course of the project.

Operations director at Hays Energy, Eliot Davies, said that the investment by the government would also help the company to hit their CO² targets for 2020 as well as creating thousands of permanent and temporary job opportunities in the industry. Davies said that the majority of the new vacancies would be at the design and build stages of the wind farm project developments. Going into more detail he confirmed that, “at the design stages we expect work to be created for professionals in environmental impact assessment, civils, electrical and mechanical design and commercial engineering. At the construction stage, we expect to see demand for civils, mechanical and electrical professionals, construction managers and support staff.”

Davies also conveyed his confidence that the UK had enough home-grown talent to fill the permanent and temporary positions that will be created. Any shortfall could be picked up from the UK gas and oil industry rather than sourcing staff from overseas.
