Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are reminding students who are looking for part time jobs over the Christmas holidays that they may not have to pay any tax on their earnings.

Students working in temporary or part time jobs may not be required to pay income tax on their wages as long as they expect to earn less than the £6,475 Personal Income Tax threshold for the year. All you have to do is fill out a P38(S) form when you start you part time job and you should be entitled to get your wages paid over to you gross of tax. That might be the difference between going out or staying in on Christmas Eve!

The director of HMRC Individuals Customer Directorate, Jane Frost, advised that, “Before starting any vacation job, it’s a good idea to make sure you know about tax. Making sure your tax code is right from the start of your paid employment can save you money and is good training for life after graduation. We want to help students understand how the tax system works so they don’t pay more than they should and also get back what is due.”
