This week, Prime Minister Gordon Brown asked businesses for their support with internship schemes and apprenticeships throughout the economic recovery.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Mr Brown pushed the members for their support with the Backing Young Britain initiative by placing as many young people in internships, apprenticeships, mentoring opportunities and placements as they could.

Brown said: "I ask each and every one of you to continue to support and help to create and grow apprenticeships, internships and new opportunities for young people.

"I would urge you and encourage you to follow up the good work you have done and take on, where you can, new internships as well as apprentices and people with skilled qualifications.

Brown also said that Britain’s home-grown talent and skill base had to ensure that businesses have ‘a pipeline of skilled workers’ to keep up with the world economy in the expected financial recovery.
