Gordon Brown announced new measures this week to help people who are still looking for graduate jobs after leaving university.
Under the new proposals, any graduate who has been unemployed and claiming benefits for six months or more will be entitled to apply for “high-quality” internships. They will also be eligible for training to help them set up in business on their own.
This extra help for graduate job seekers is part of a larger package designed to help all young people who are looking for work.
Other measures stated that from January next year all unemployed sixteen and seventeen year olds who are not currently in education or taking part in training will be guaranteed ‘a place in learning.’ He also said that anyone unemployed who is aged between 18 and 24 would have access to training and work experience as soon as they signed on.
Speaking in the middle of a debate on the Queen’s Speech, Mr Brown said that, "We know that unemployment can be damaging to young people and are determined to do everything we can to help them achieve their potential." He added that nobody could justify leaving young people ‘out of work, in poverty and without hope for the future.’
