There is some good news filtering out at the moment which indicates that the market for both permanent and temporary jobs may be picking up.
The monthly Report on Jobs, produced by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), found that October was the third month in a row where the number of permanent and temporary vacancies on offer had increased.
The growth in the number of permanent positions is now at a two year high and the growth in the number of temporary jobs is at its highest level since July 2008. Remuneration for both types of work is still falling, but at its most sluggish rate since last September.
The chief executive of the REC, Kevin Green, said that, "These figures show that the UK jobs market is on the road to recovery, with signs of improvement for the third month in a row. The demand for permanent recruitment is returning as employers start to hire people at an accelerating rate.” Green, in contrast to some other job market commentators, also forecast that the number of people classed as unemployed would not reach the 3 million mark next year.
Bernard Brown, KPMG’s head of business services, also captured the optimistic tone of the report’s results saying that the permanent and temporary jobs market ‘looks healthier today than at any time in the past two years.’
At the same time, Monster’s October Employment Index grew by seven points, suggesting that a revival in online recruitment for permanent and temporary jobs is also gathering pace. The construction sector is still considered to be in the doldrums but most others recruitment sectors are starting to show those famous green shoots of recovery.
