Are you experienced or trained in the leisure / tourist / catering industry? Do you want to run a new lodge on Ghana’s beautiful coast? Stumble Inn, just outside Elmina, in Ghana, has been built over the last 12 months by English owners, with sustainable, ecological and traditional concepts in mind. With a clay, timber and thatch volunteer block that can sleep up to 48 people in dormitory accommodation, to private en-suite huts, using the same building materials, Stumble Inn is ready to cater to backpackers, travelers, holiday makers and longer term volunteers.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain overseas practical experience, and run a lodge on Ghana's beautiful coast. This is a voluntary position which will provide you with fantastic experience and look invaluable on your CV. How many people get to manage a lodge on a beach?!

Accommodation and food will be included, which will be in return for a commitment of 12 months to the project. Please see www.stumbleinnghana.com for a snapshot of how the website is going to look, and if you would like to see more photos please feel free to contact us.

The Manager

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic individual to spend 12 months (or more) in Ghana overseeing the opening, managing the lodge, staff, and setting up processes for the effective running of the place. You will come from a background in leisure and tourism management, ideally with experience of working overseas / travelled in Africa (not essential however!).

Specifics include:

  • Managing bar, kitchen and maintenance staff, cleaners and gardeners. The on site restaurant will serve a variety of local dishes alongside home favourites, in a relaxed beachfront setting
  • Ensuring that processes are put in place to take bookings, manage guests and oversee the smooth running of accommodation and related facilities
  • Ensure that the kitchen / bar is run to cater for the guests; monitoring input and output of drinks and foods; discussing and developing menus, staff and systems
  • Ensure that finances are well looked after, and that stock takes and accounts are done at regular intervals
  • Ensure that Stumble Inn has a great atmosphere, where guests are not only happy to stay, but happy to recommend to others.
  • Look after the guests!

The manager will work with Ghanaian staff, many of whom are already established to identify suppliers, place purchase orders and the such.
One of the English lodge owners, who is resident in Ghana, will provide support but the individual will be expected to work independently and without supervision.

The successful applicant will meet the following personal criteria

- Experience in leisure and tourist industry, ideally in the Hotels & Resorts sector
- Highly motivated and enthusiastic individual
- Committed to the principles of integrating with local communities
- Self starter, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Vision and innovation
- Ability to build lasting relationships
- Experience of working overseas

All applicants must be able to commit to a minimum duration of 12 months at the hostel, and be available for an immediate start.
