Network Rail has filled twice as many graduate job places this year as it did in 2008. And over half of those vacancies with the owner and operator of Britain’s rail infrastructure were for graduate jobs in London.
In total there were over 270 new graduate starters at Network Rail this year. 40 of the places were short term two month placements via the Graduate Talent Pool scheme launched by the government. All of the other graduate positions were permanent and recruitment for them was helped in large part by schemes in partnership with the University of Warwick, the University College London and Sheffield Hallam University.
Around 80 gained their graduate positions after completing an MSc qualification with UCL and the University of Warwick which was geared specifically towards working at Network Rail. A further 20 graduate vacancies were taken up by students who had received sponsorship for a railway engineering foundation degree at Sheffield Hallam.
The balance of around 140 graduate opportunities was filled via the company’s own graduate job recruitment scheme.
Network Rail's head of resourcing, Adrian Thomas, said: "By working with world class institutions such as University College London, the University of Warwick and Sheffield Hallam University, as well as using more traditional recruitment processes, we have hired terrific talent who will play their part in delivering multi million pound projects to revamp stations, build new track and improve Britain's railways for everyone."
Although the graduate positions were spread out all around Britain over half of the opportunities were graduate jobs in London. Network Rail’s starting salary for London graduate jobs is between £25,890 and £26,900 depending on whereabouts in the capital the position is based. Other benefits at the company include a £3,000 welcome bonus and 28 days annual holiday.
