Climate Change Battle Can Create Millions Of New Jobs Says Blair

Climate Change Battle Can Create Millions Of New Jobs Says Blair Millions of new full or part time jobs could be created in the battle against climate change according to a new report backed by ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The report, Cutting The Cost, argues that an accord on climate change between world countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions would be a boost to the economy and could create as many as 10 million new full or part time jobs by the year 2020. There would also be huge cost savings for countries taking part in global climate change initiatives.

The report by a non-profit organisation based in London, the Climate Group, was presented to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon yesterday. Leaders from around the world are currently at a summit in New York to discuss climate change and are hoping to accelerate political momentum before crucial global emissions talks take place in Copenhagen at the end of this year.

“Forging and implementing a global deal will not be easy,” Blair said. He added, however, that, “If crafted right, an ambitious global deal can create millions of new jobs and be a key part of this recovery.” He argues in the foreword to the report that, even if you set aside the detrimental effects of climate change, the world benefits in an economic sense from a concerted action to cut emissions.
