Listen up anyone who is currently looking for graduate IT jobs in London and elsewhere.
Microsoft recently announced that it would provide free IT training and try to convince small businesses that it deals with, to take on jobseekers. The move, which could see them spend tens of millions of pounds, is part of an effort to reduce the number of people who are unemployed in the UK. They will work together with the Work Foundation, JobCentre Plus and charities around the UK to facilitate the programme.
Microsoft hopes that the initiative will help as many as half a million people get back into work. That figure is a projection from a pilot scheme which the company ran for three years in the West Midlands where it gave help to 28 thousand unemployed people. 1 in 10 of the jobseekers found a job within the next three months and 4 in 10 had found work within twelve months.
If those sorts of figures could be replicated in these tougher times then it would be great news for anyone looking for graduate IT jobs in London or other places around Britain.
Microsoft will help to create three thousand apprenticeships over the next few years. Some of them will be within Microsoft itself and more will be at some of the other 32,000 IT firms that it works with. They also said they would offer 450 thousand training course vouchers to attend their IT academies over the coming three years. Those courses will teach a range of skills starting from the very basic, such as using a mouse and finding your way around a keyboard, right up to advanced IT skills like network configuration and programming.
At the time of the announcement ministers from all three main parties welcomed the programme.
