A computer science competition has been launched, with university bursaries and opportunities to kick-start students' careers on offer.

Sectors of industry have recently complained that there is a lack of graduate applications with sufficient computer skills and training.

BrainAcademy 2007 will search for top young computer talent, with the theme of this year's competition being Computer Science, Creativity and Going Green.

As reported by Onrec.com, Dr Paul Curzon, organiser of the competition, said: "The Computer Science industries urgently need lots of new talent. The jobs are there.

"What is needed are people with the creative skills to take up those challenges.

"BrainAcademy is a fun way both to encourage the most talented students and give them a head start not only with the life-changing opportunity of a university education, but also to push them to the front of the queue for great career options."

The undergraduate section of the contest offers students the opportunity to win prizes including a tuition fees paid place at university, a fast track to a career with sponsors Microsoft and summer work experience opportunities.

Applicants will be asked to complete an online research quiz, after which some will qualify
for the Computer Science creativity challenge. Finally those competing for university places will take part in a detailed interview.
