Although the news for graduates has been all doom and gloom recently, with the financial sector for graduate jobs being hit especially hard, The Times has commissioned some research with has revealed some positive news.
Careers services at a number of universities throughout the UK have been surveyed, to find out about the quantity of entry-level jobs suitable for graduates. The universities include illustrious names such as Manchester, Cardiff, Bristol, Oxford and Edinburgh universities. All in all, it suggests that there are still over 3200 organisations who are looking to recruit graduates in 2009. There are a number which are also offering short term placement, internships or work experience. These are just the recruiters that are actively recruiting through the universities, so at Employment4students, we believe that number may well be substantially higher. Even with this figure, if you take all universities into account, it’s very possible that there are approximately 40,000 graduate jobs being advertised throughout the UK.
“Despite the prevailing bad news from the economy, we are getting vacancies from employers on a daily basis,” stated Paul Redmond, head of the Careers and Employability Service at the University of Liverpool.
The general perception of graduates and jobseekers is based on what is widely and openly reported, which can be a concern as there may not be a realisation that in fact there are still a large number of vacancies being advertised. The state of the economy might mean that there is more competition than ever for the graduate jobs available, but it is undeniable that there are still a large amount of employers who are looking to recruit graduates, and using universities to advertise their graduate jobs.
Interestingly, a large percentage of jobs advertised by careers services are from small to medium sized enterprises, with larger, and more well known recruiters having no trouble in recruiting and attracting applications.
The advice is straightforward though for students looking for graduate jobs – don’t give up, work on your CV, and keep looking for less conventional roles. These may not attract the same levels of applications and not be as competitive.
