net job hunting the norm
13-Jun-2007

Net job hunting the norm Students and graduates now see surfing the net as the normal way to find a job, according to recruitment experts.

Alan Brown, sales director at Graduate Prospects, emphasised: "Many current students and recent graduates have grown up with the PC and the Internet and see them as natural tools for their career planning process."

However, being able to trawl through job ads in the comfort of your own home has its drawbacks, as it makes competition for those jobs higher than ever.

Obi Okwuadigbo, from Thefutureworks, Coventry University's commercial recruitment agency, told Onrec.com: "[Internet searching] means there is more competition as jobs are available for everyone to see on a national and global scale as opposed to the old fashioned local advertisement in the local newspaper."

Many large private and public organisations, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and the NHS now do not accept paper applications at all.

This can present problems for students and graduates who do not have easy and reliable access to computer and internet facilities in their own homes.

However, web-savvy students can present themselves to potential employers very effectively on the web.

Many students and graduates are now choosing to post their CVs on internet job-boards, allowing lots of employers to simultaneously peruse their qualifications and experience.
