it entrepreneur pledges £36 million to oxford university

IT Entrepreneur Pledges £36 Million To Oxford University We wonder if any of you who are currently looking for graduate IT jobs in London will be inspired by the story of Dr James Martin. He has just offered up to $50 million (£36 million) in funding to Oxford University.

Dr Martin, an alumnus of Keble College, Oxford, has said that he will match - dollar for dollar up to the $50 million mark – any other donations made to the James Martin 21st Century School. The physics graduate helped to establish the school back in 2005 with an initial sum of $100 million (£72 million).

The 75 year old information technology entrepreneur said: “My view is that while we may be distracted by today's credit crunch, we must not forget the bigger picture. We need to safeguard a future for the generations that follow us. We urgently have to work towards solutions to critical global challenges like climate change, world population growth and the impact of the singularity in computing."

Dr Martin, often thought of as one of the most important and influential computer scientists in the world, said that his aim was to inspire others to offer ‘financial support and new kinds of collaboration.’

The offer began yesterday (12 March) and will be open for one year to any other donations of at least $1 million. It means that, if the maximum sum is matched, there will be another $100 million of funding for the James Martin 21st Century School whose aim is to deal with some of the most difficult challenges facing the world in the next century. The school’s 15 institutes target such issues as the latest solutions in science and technology and many other subjects that people working in graduate IT jobs in London would be interested in.

Dr Martin was born and educated in England but later went on to found the US-based IT company, Headstrong. He now resides on an island he bought in Bermuda.

So, if you would one day like to own your very own island in Bermuda and be one of Oxford University’s most generous benefactors then start looking for a graduate IT job in London right now!
