Sainsbury’s Creating New Part Time Jobs

16 Jan 2009

Sainsbury’s Creating New Part Time Jobs Sainsbury’s, the supermarket chain, is bucking the recession trend by creating around 5,000 new vacancies – many of them part time jobs.

Over a very successful Christmas period, they had envisioned that they would need to hire around 12,000 people to work in part time jobs. They actually took on about 21,000 people. They believe that some of the employees were of such high quality that they decided to keep 2,000 of them on the payroll - and are looking to hire around 3,000 more with the opening of six new supermarkets.

After reporting a 4.5 percent rise in like-for-like sales through the festive period, the Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s, Justin King said that, “Sainsbury’s good trading performance has continued over the past 13 weeks… with our best ever Christmas performance completing a good overall third quarter.”

23 December was highlighted as Sainsbury’s busiest ever day of trading – and it also broke its own trading performance records on Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Such encouraging trading figures - in these current times - must be a large factor in the supermarket chain looking to recruit more people into part time jobs and temporary work.

The figures released by Sainsbury’s are largely in line with data released by rival Waitrose who had a 41 per cent increase in sales between 20 December and 27 December.

On the other hand, Marks and Spencer recently said that they would be closing 27 shops and would have to lose about 1,200 employees.

So, with Sainsbury’s in the mood to recruit more staff, it’s probably a great time to check out the stores in your area to see if they are looking to recruit staff in the near future.
