good news for scottish work placements

Good News for Scottish Work Placements Scottish students hoping to land internships or a work placement have been given a boost by the Scottish Government.

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) arranges internships and work experience placements around the world for undergraduates and recent graduates of engineering, science and architecture. It has announced that its programme in Scotland will be expanded following an increase of funding of £250,000 over the next three years from the Government.

The Cabinet Secretary of Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop, said:

“The Scottish Government wants to build a self-confident, outward looking Scotland. We want our young people to be successful learners, confident individuals and responsible global citizens. We are equally determined to ensure Scotland becomes a more attractive place to live, work and study to support our aim of delivering higher levels of sustainable economic growth for the benefit of all.”

Hyslop added that the initiative should raise the employability of students and help to strengthen relationships between academic institutions and the business world – both here and overseas. She thought the work of the IAESTE programme would help to further these aims by attracting the most talented graduates and students to Scotland.

She also pointed out that the programme has been incredibly successful in the last couple of years – the number of placements tripling in that time.

On its website the IAESTE says that the increased funding is aimed to:

  1. Allow 100 students and young people to increase and broaden their skills – both life and work, by carrying out technical placements and internships abroad
  2. Help develop certain sectors in Scotland - with particular emphasis on renewable, manufacturing and electronic technologies, by providing funding for 100 companies and university departments to host overseas engineering and science students. The students will be able to share their expertise in life sciences during their work placements
  3. Help increase awareness of Scotland as a place to live, work and study among overseas applicants and agencies
  4. Help make Scottish business and industry more aware of employment opportunities of international talent, through offering these internships and work experience
  5. Make students and young Scots more knowledgeable and experienced by giving them the opportunity to partake in high quality international work experience opportunities – which should contribute towards the globalisation of Scotland’s workforce.
If this news from the IAESTE has increased your interest in internships or work experience then - no matter whether you are in Scotland or south of the border - you’ll find all sorts of opportunities in our internship section. From that page you can locate all the latest vacancies and details of companies that offer both internships and work experience placements.
