job security changes graduates outlook
21-Nov-2008

Job security changes graduates outlook University leavers attempting to bag a graduate job in London are more interested in getting onto the career ladder than using their degrees, it has been claimed.

According to new research by financial services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), more than four out of every five graduates are more concerned about getting their first job than applying the knowledge they acquired during their university studies.

Meanwhile, some 42 per cent expected to accept lower wages as a result of the current downturn in the wider economy, while 60 per cent said they had debt in the region of £10,000 to £20,000.

Commenting on the contracting jobs market, Sonja Stockton, PwC head of student recruitment, said: "In a tight jobs market, students need to examine how their non-academic skills can combine with a good quality degree to make their application and experience distinctive."

Earlier this month, PwC, whose UK headquarters are in London, was named the UK's number one graduate employer in the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers league table.

The achievement marks the company's fifth consecutive year at the top of the newspapers national graduate recruitment survey.
