University leavers hunting for graduate jobs in London may like to know that in the past four years the number of graduate nurses employed in the UK has almost doubled, according to new research.

Figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) indicate there were 43.7 per cent more nurses in employment following universities 2007 graduation ceremony when compared with the number in nursing jobs in 2004.

The agency's What graduates do 2008 survey, which questioned 200,000 British graduates in January found 4,215 were working in nursing half a year after they left university.

In 2004 just 2,935 were in the same position.

Royal College of Nursing (RCN), student adviser Gill Robertson said: "Some of this will have been down to an increased number of places but also the change to all-graduate profession in Wales and Northern Ireland might be being reflected."

"We would hope it means more graduate nurses are staying in the profession," she added.

In related news, nurses are calling for safer needles after almost half have received a needle-stick injury at work.

General-secretary for the RCN said that the figures show needle injuries are an everyday threat for nurses working in the National Health Service.
