University leavers looking for graduate IT jobs may be interested to hear that businesses on the Shetland Isles are being offered a £7,500 incentive to take on graduates.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise has set aside £76,500 for the scheme – which was launched in 1995 and aimed to target the fishing and aquaculture industry.

Five businesses have already signed up, receiving £37,500 between them to support their graduate recruitment programmes.

NB Communication is one of the first firms to take on a graduate and receive a grant.

The web design company has employed 22-year-old John Pottinger, who returned to Shetland after studying a computing degree at Dundee's Abertay University.

John said: "It was very important for me to come back to Shetland. I came back last summer and have been keeping my eye open for jobs."

"This is the only one that ticked all the boxes for me," he added.

His employer David Nicol said that the graduate recruitment scheme is extremely helpful and will allow the company to continue its growth.

Meanwhile, according to research by Push .co.uk, students leaving university in 2009 will graduate with unprecedented amounts of debt.
