Although the number of jobs for Newcastle students may not be directly affected, the actual number of graduates from the university is set to increase. If you are a student in Newcastle, you might be intrigued to hear that the city’s University is to follow in the footsteps of other learning centres by setting up a campus in Malaysia. The new medical and biotechnology faculty located in the Johor province will make it easier for south-east Asians to achieve a low cost British University degree.
This ‘internationalisation’ practice is becoming increasingly popular. Other universities with similar overseas ventures are The University of Nottingham (China and Malaysia); Liverpool University (China); Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh and the University of Wales (both with campuses in Singapore).
Next year, even more institutions are set to follow suit with Hull University and a host of public schools from all over the UK also looking to get in on the Malaysian act.
The Iskandar region of Johor is well-situated - it’s only a few kilometres away from Singapore and is being further developed to put itself in a position to pick up the over-spill from that region.
Up until now the prohibitively high costs involved for Malaysian students who study in the UK has been a barrier to all but the richest families. From next year though, it is expected that the cost of completing the course to full degree level in Johor will be about half of what it would be in the Newcastle area.
