The fashion industry has said it would fill more graduate jobs in London with university leavers from fashion colleges if the courses were of a higher standard, it has been reported.

Jasper Conran, Mulberry and Henry Poole said the government needs to do more to support fashion colleges or Britain will start to fall behind the rest of the world, according to the Independent.

The paper states that while British designers dominate the fashion industry, with more than 3,000 graduates completing university each year in the UK, there is a huge skills gap and a lack of skilled artisans capable of turning those designs into catwalk garments.

Supply director at Mulberry Ian Scott told the news provider: "There used to be a big pool of skilled labour, which has gone now."

"We did some research a couple of years ago and found that 50 per cent of our workforce is over 50," he added.

Meanwhile, Elena Corchero, a fashion designer from Scotland, has been selected as a finalist for the British Council's Young Fashion Entrepreneur Awards 2009 and will be touring India alongside the other five successful fashion industry hopefuls.
