University leavers looking for graduate jobs in London are demanding serious job interviews that give them an insight into the way a company works.

According to Sainsbury's, after speaking to potential recruits from nine UK universities it found that many interview questions were disliked by candidates who expect interviewers to take a more direct approach.

Questions like "what are your worst qualities" were less appreciated than questions like "why do you think you are right for this job".

"At a time when a brand's authenticity, transparency and values are key to consumers and employees alike, what graduate candidates want from an interview is a serious focus on the job in hand," said Jo Gidley, graduate recruitment manager at Sainsbury's.

She added that graduates expected their interview to be conducted in a personable and interested manner.

Meanwhile Cable & Wireless is recruiting graduate engineers for its two-year vocational programme which gives recruits the skills they need to become chartered engineers.

The scheme requires graduates to complete four six-month technical placements and candidates are offered a permanent placement at the end of the programme.
