Students get marketing experience

11 Jul 2007

Students get marketing experience Students in Wales are now able to take part in a hands-on marketing experience.

The first Chartered Institute of Marketing student branch has been set up in Cardiff.

With the help of a £250 grant from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, 14 students formed a working committee, compiled a business plan and created the branch.

Known as Cardiff's Insight into Marketing, the venture is intended to provide information and experience for Cardiff University business and marketing students.

Robyn Kimble, a Business Management undergraduate and treasurer at the branch, said: "We set up the student branch to ensure Cardiff marketing students are more aware of current issues and ever-changing marketing trends.

"Rather than learning from a text book we want to hear from key people in the industry who can share their in-depth knowledge and experience with us, through discussing their most successful campaigns and their future plans for the current organic and online market.

Joanna Corp is chair of The Chartered Institute of Marketing's South Wales branch, which is supporting the venture and will assist in finding speakers for its events.

She said: "Not only does this look amazing on their CV, it will also give them access to the commercial environment through contacts in the industry."

It seems that students with this sort of practical industry experience are much more likely to get jobs when they graduate.

Many employers emphasise that when choosing graduate recruits, they examine the practical commitment already shown to their chosen profession.
