Virgin Money has launched a new card which many students may find useful.
The card, called Pay As You Go, works like a phone in that it can be topped up with money in various different ways, including on the internet.
Once 'loaded', the card can be used to shop in the high street and online - and to withdraw cash.
Cash-strapped students with poor credit histories may find the product suitable, as it is not necessary to link the card to a bank account.
There are also no late fees, credit checks or interest charges.
It may also interest those who want to keep a close eye on their budgets - as there's no danger of going overdrawn.
The Pay As You Go card also entitles users to lots of discounts offered by the Virgin group.
These include ten per cent off Virgin Holidays, Virgin Wines, several types of Virgin insurance and ten per cent off at Virgin Megastores.
Jayne-Anne Gadhia, chief executive of Virgin Money said: "I am delighted to be able to offer the Virgin Pay As You Go Card.
"This card will allow users to buy on the internet, on the high street, and save money on a range of Virgin products."
