anyone for tennis?
04-Jul-2007

Anyone for tennis? Drag those old tennis racquets out of the cupboard - a UK university is launching a degree course all about the game.

The University of Central Lancashire has said its sports technology degree in tennis will address the "knowledge gap" for tennis players and will focus on the "scientific and technological" as well as physical and nutritional aspects of the game.

Dr David Fewtrell, senior lecturer in sports technology at the university, emphasised the employment benefits of the course for those who don't go on to become tennis professionals.

He said: "There are a number of career opportunities which students can go on to pursue on completion of the course because of its science base.

"Some of these paths may be equipment design and manufacturing sector, research and development of sports products - and technical sales and product support."

British tennis success has been in short supply in recent years.

With the Wimbledon championships in full swing and many experiencing their annual, short-lived urge to give the game a go, the launch of the new degree couldn't have come at a better time.

It is hoped the course, thought to be the first of its kind in the country, will also add to the number of top UK tennis coaches.
