Students wanting to save money on their car insurance should resist the urge to "modify" their wheels, an expert has advised.

Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at the British Insurance Broker's Association (BIBA), recently emphasised that the key to reducing a young driver's premium is his or her choice of vehicle.

He explained that small, slow and cheap vehicles are often the best in this respect.

Mr Trudgill said: "On many occasions we see young drivers wanting to buy something sporty.

"If you buy something that's grouped a level higher, it's going to be expensive on insurance and cost a lot of money."

Fans of TV show Pimp My Ride will also be disappointed to learn that sticking extras like alloys and spoilers on their cars can also leave them out of pocket.

Mr Trudgill commented that "it's also very tempting for young drivers to modify their vehicle, put on alloy wheels and things like that".

He continued: "That is a bit of an insurance nightmare and will raise their premium again, so best to leave the car as bare as possible."

At least things might get better when you leave university. Between the ages of 21 and 25, car insurance premiums tend to decrease dramatically.
