An ethical student account has been launched in response to increased demand for eco-friendly services.
The Smile student account, provided by Co-operative Financial services (CFS), aims to help combat climate change, as well as implementing more ethically sound policies in other areas.
The account provides 3.04 per cent AER interest and a free overdraft of up to £2,000.
A spokeswoman for CFS said: "Recent research by the Cooperative Bank found that eight in ten UK consumers would choose to buy an eco-friendly product in favour of a non-eco friendly product in order to do their bit to combat climate change.
"As a result of the ethical policy and competitive rates, the Smile student account won the 'Best Online Student Account Provider' at the Your Money 2006 awards."
The CFS also emphasised that students should look at the complete package an account offers, rather than just focusing on the free gifts available.
It seems it makes financial as well as ethical sense to investigate all the options carefully.
Major high street bank HSBC recently announced plans to abolish free borrowing for new graduates.
From this summer, thousands of university leavers will have to pay almost ten per cent in interest on their overdrafts.
Experts have predicted that the other high street banks may soon follow suit in an effort to curb the nation's huge levels of borrowing.
