The London borough of Ealing has announced that it is set to offer teenagers new learning options as part of a nationwide diploma scheme.

The teenage diplomas scheme will provide 14 to 19-year-olds with the opportunity to take part in a construction and the built environment course or one of the creative and media variety.

It is hoped that the diplomas will offer young people the opportunity to broaden their education beyond that of formal GCSE, A-Level and apprenticeship qualifications.

A new complex is set to be built in the borough to house the construction diploma learning facilities, reports the Ealing Times.

"This will allow us to further develop our agenda to provide young people with more choice, real-life work skills and knowledge that's relevant to employers," said Councillor Ian Gibb.

"Employers will be involved at each step of the way to ensure the programme delivers what they need - motivated young people with an understanding of industry backed by sound literacy, numeracy and IT skills."

The diplomas are being rolled out in 145 areas throughout the UK.
