Graduate Job News

A number of students have taken part in a demonstration outside the Dail in Dublin to demand for more government action on climate change, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

According to the paper, the rally was organised by the University College Dublin's (UCD) students' union and the aim was to keep climate change on the agenda ahead of the elections.

Students wanted the parties to commit to a three per cent reduction in emissions every year.

In addition, an end to relying on carbon trading as a way of meeting targets set by the Kyoto agreement was called for.

Currently seven billion tonnes of CO2 is emitted due to fossil fuel use and a further 1.6 billion is emitted by land use change, such as deforestation.

The Fourth Assessment Report on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggests that temperatures are likely to rise between 1.1 and 6.4 degrees C above 1990 levels by the end of this century.
