students make career progress with placements
17-Apr-2007

Students make career progress with placements Shell Step, the organisation which places hundreds of students in business project work placements, has launched its annual search for the most promising young businessmen and women in the UK.

Now in its 21st year, the program focuses on placing students with small and medium-sized UK firms during their summer breaks.

The most talented students go on to sub-regional and regional heats, finally bidding for the title of the "UK's Most Enterprising Student".

James Smith, chairman of Shell UK, said: "Shell Step aims to help undergraduates to develop real business skills that will give them a valuable head-start when they enter the workplace. Shell Step continues to have a lasting impact, delivering tangible benefits for the students and companies that take part."

The UK has the highest rates of honours degree graduation in the European Union. This means there is huge competition in the graduate jobs market and employers tend to favour candidates who demonstrate an enthusiasm and level of skills experience that goes beyond the lecture hall.

The statistics seem to speak for themselves: Last year 96 per cent of students said their Shell Step placement made them more employable.

It seems that doing a work placement might just give you the edge and get you that dream job when you finally graduate.
