Guardian offers student journalists a career break

19 Apr 2007

Guardian offers student journalists a career break Keen on a career in the media, but not sure where to start? If so, the Guardian newspaper has launched its annual competition encouraging students to break into the world of journalism.

The Guardian Student Media Awards recognise outstanding achievement in 13 categories, including student newspaper, student reporter and student feature writer.

There is also a new category looking for the Student Broadcaster of the Year, in association with Sky News.

The awards will be judged by editors and reporters from some of the top national newspapers and broadcasters and the winner of each category stands to win work experience at the Guardian and up to £1,500.

Journalism is a notoriously competitive career, especially for graduates straight out of university who are lacking in professional, practical experience. Students often find it incredibly difficult to get their work seen by industry professionals.

Previous Guardian award winners have gone to build successful careers in both newspaper and broadcast journalism. So who knows – it might just be the way to get your foot in the industry door.
