a journalism course that really could save your life
23-Apr-2007

A journalism course that really could save your life A top journalism course is highlighting the riskier side of a career as a correspondent - by putting its students through "hostile environment" training.

Students on the one-year MA in International Journalism at University College Falmouth are taking part in the training to prepare them for reporting from hostile environments, says HoldtheFrontPage.

Budding journalists will spend three days at a military training camp, learning about everything from first aid to kidnap and ambush avoidance.

MA International Journalism course leader George Matheson, who has himself worked as a foreign correspondent, said: "It's really difficult when you're passionate about chasing down that story but you have to realise what's more important - the story, or your life."

Recent events involving overseas journalists, notably the abduction of BBC correspondent Alan Johnston in Gaza, have highlighted the dangers faced.

Despite the risks involved overseas journalism is a popular career goal of graduates, favoured by many as an exciting alternative to the typical desk job.
