welsh political party offers to pay student debts
24-Apr-2007

Welsh political party offers to pay student debts Students in Wales are being offered a novel way of reducing their debts - by getting politically active.

Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru is against top-up fees and has launched a youth manifesto, entitled "It's time to make a difference for young people".

In a bid to win the hearts, minds and votes of the younger generation, the party pledges that once in power it would take on the student loan repayments of graduates from Welsh universities for five years, provided they continued to live and work in Wales during that period.

Nerys Evans, Plaid Mid and West Wales regional candidate, said: "In Wales today, young people face an uncertain future… We need a new government in Cardiff Bay to start delivering real change."

This is further evidence that student debt is set to be a hot political issue at the next general election.

With many students leaving university with debts of more than £20,000 and all political parties eager to garner graduate votes, students should keep an eye on which party can offer them the best deal.
