Some academics fear a new website dedicated to academic social networking will encourage plagiarism among students.
Carmun.com has been designed to allow students to share reviews and tips on a wide range of academic sources.
Students can join academic groups they're interested in and can source information from the site as research for their studies.
Site founder Jonathan Edson plans to allow students to submit their own work in the near future, the Western Mail reports. Many in the academic community fear that this could lead to plagiarism.
Carl Harris, deputy president of the National Union of Students at Trinity College, Carmarthen, highlighted potential difficulties.
He said: "Using the posts as a substitute for their [students'] own work could potentially cause no end of problems for students and the institutions that have worked so hard to combat plagiarism."
Academic institutions are increasingly using advanced computer technology to analyse work they suspect has been plagiarised.
Dr Marcus Leaning from Trinity emphasised: "The best advice to students is to do their own work."
