New media undergraduates at one university can now build practical experience and extensive portfolios while they study.

Many industry sectors have complained in the recent months that they are suffering skills shortages - because graduate applicants don't have the necessary business skills and experience.

Now Sheffield Hallam University has introduced four new courses which, it is hoped, will provide the new media industry with graduates already experienced in many key areas.

Creative Match reports that designers, artists and technical students from these courses will work together in teams to produce multi-media campaigns.

All the material produced will then be formed into a professional practice show reel for prospective employers.

Bob Steele, course leader for the MSc Games Software Development course said: "We already have excellent relationships with people like Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Codemasters, who want our graduates for the games industry.

"We anticipate totally new jobs emerging for the other strands - we are completely ahead of the game with these courses."
