gamers get qualified
26-Jun-2007

Gamers get qualified Tempted to play computer games instead of studying? With the new computer games degree on offer, it seems you can now do both.

From this September, students can study for an MSc in Computer Games and Entertainment at Goldsmiths, University of London.

The degree is suitable for those wanting to get into the games and entertainment industry for the first time, as well as those wanting to upgrade already existing skills.

It seems students on the course won't have much time for playing games though - the course focuses mainly on advanced games programming, the use of new technologies and the development of teamwork skills.

And it seems students will be in high demand when they graduate.

William Latham, programme director of the course and former creative director of The Thing for PS2, Xbox and PC, emphasised that "students who do this MSc will gain a firm positioning for a career in the multibillion-pound Games and Entertainment industries".

He continued: "There is a big shortfall in the UK for good games programmers and technical managers/directors and this course will address this serious shortfall.

"During the course there will be opportunities and events for industry networking to hopefully secure jobs for students in the UK or abroad before they finish."

The course can be taken over a period of one or two years, to help people who need to work part-time.

Places are currently still available for this September.
