google want talent
26-Jun-2007

Google want talent Google only hire top talent, says its staffing boss.

Liane Hornsey, staffing director at Google, has outlined just how hard it is to get a job with the firm.

As reported by Peoplemanagement.co.uk, Ms Hornsey explained: "We are fundamentally an ideas company, so we are 100 per cent reliant on talent.

"Google wouldn’t be Google without having, as we see it, the very best people in the world.

"We don’t have talent programmes as you would understand it - we only hire talented people in the first place."

The internet giant has every reason to be confident. According to Ms Hornsey, Google receives 1,000 applications for every post available.

However, those who do make it through the doors get rather exceptional treatment. Every new recruit (called a "Noogler") is given a cake, presents and balloons on joining the company.

They also get assigned a buddy and have weekly meetings to discuss their Google development.

Ms Hornsey commented: "We want to ensure they have a clearly defined role that they are happy with, and that they feel special the moment they join the company."

A recent survey by US-based research firm Universum found that MBA students would rather work for Google than anyone else.

The firm came top of the list of the most desirable places to work when students were asked to rank their choice of ideal employers and answer questions about their career expectations.

Other perks of working for Google include free meals, massages and the ability to work on a project of your choice for part of the time.
