4,000 medical posts unfilled, group claims
27-Jun-2007

4,000 medical posts unfilled, group claims Some 4,000 junior doctor training posts remain unfilled just weeks before jobs start on August 1st, a pressure group has insisted.

Junior doctor lobby group Remedy UK claims to have seen a letter from the Department of Health which admits that in some areas, only 30 per cent of roles are currently filled.

As reported by Personneltoday.com, a spokesperson for Remedy UK said: "The situation is even worse than we thought when we started flagging up the problem of the August handover months ago.

"We now find ourselves in the Kafkaesque situation of having thousands of excellent doctors with no job for August and thousands of empty posts. It's difficult to see how this won't [have an] impact on patients."

This is the latest twist in the long-running saga regarding the online system used to recruit junior doctors.

Last month, Jim Johnson, chairman of the British Medical Association, was forced to resign over a letter he wrote to the Times in which he supported reforming, rather than completely abolishing the Medical Training Application Service.

Upon leaving his position he insisted that "the medical profession is on the edge".

Patricia Hewitt, health secretary, has also been under great pressure to resign over the fiasco, in which thousands of junior doctors are struggling to gain employment within the medical community.
