Nursing positions are by far the most sought-after in the medical profession, according to a leading recruiter.
Specialist recruitment site Jobs4Medical.co.uk has revealed that 40 per cent of its medical applications relate to nursing roles and that thousands of qualified nurses in the UK are struggling to secure employment.
Since the beginning of the year, 9,000 candidates have applied for nursing positions, yet just 3,200 positions have been posted.
Nurses with specialist qualifications are said to be the hardest hit, because niche roles are usually among the first to go during staff cutbacks.
"There are large numbers of nurses out there who have been given a very high level of training, but who now find themselves without a full-time position," said Vicky Scott, operations manager at Jobs4Medical.co.uk.
"The state of the NHS is a highly visible issue in the UK at the moment and, although end of tenure in specific positions goes some way to explain why there are increasing numbers of positions opening up, the numbers of nurses unfortunately losing their jobs has risen significantly," she added.
In the past 18 months, the NHS has cut back as many as 22,000 nursing roles, according to the Royal College of Nursing.
