Internet Access Via Mobile Phones Triples In 2 Years

Ofcom has produced research which suggests that the number of people using their mobile phones to access the internet has tripled in just two years.

Media watchdog Ofcom’s Communications Market Report showed that 13.5 million people in Britain now regularly use their mobile phone to surf the web. The number of people using mobile phones for internet access in 2008 was not too far above 5.5 million. In the first quarter of the year alone, internet take-up via mobile phones has risen by almost a quarter and the number of people using 3G mobile phone connections was up 8 million last year.

Almost two-thirds of mobile phone usage by 16 to 24 year olds was for text messaging or engaging with social media. Indeed, Facebook is one of the main factors in the increase of people accessing the internet from their mobiles as it accounts for 45 per cent of mobile internet usage. In comparison, Google makes up for less than 10 per cent of mobile internet use.

As for the more traditional methods of using a mobile, chatting to other people was up 6 per cent and text messaging rose by around a quarter.

The report also revealed that the average Brit spends around 60 hours a week on the internet, watching television or using their mobile phones. That means that for about half of the time that people are awake, they are using some form of media to keep themselves occupied. Indeed, we have become so skilled at using different media at the same time – watching television as you check your Twitter timeline on your mobile phone for example – that we manage to fit in almost 9 hours of media usage into a 7 hour timeframe.
