Folk in Britain are now throwing away £800 million of their hard-earned cash simply by being on the wrong mobile phone deals. Over half of the 2000 people surveyed by Top10.com about their mobile phone contracts revealed that they are not using all of their inclusive monthly minutes allowance each month. If they just took some time to compare mobile phone deals and switch to a more appropriate tariff then they could save a small fortune. The average user could save around £60 a year by switching to a lower tariff according to the research. Scaled up from the 2000 survey sample to the total number of estimated mobile phone contract users in Britain that figure comes out at a whacking great £800 million being wasted. Alex Buttle of Top10.com said: “Before people upgrade their phones or switch networks, we recommend they check their previous bills to work out how many minutes they’re actually using. This is even more important now that new devices like the iPhone and HTC smartphones come with long contracts, generally lasting 24 months. Making the right contract choice is just as important as picking the right phone.” Buttle also said that with so many mobile phone deals to compare lots of people (42 per cent) said they find the abundance of tariffs confusing. But, with so much money being thrown down the pan, it certainly does make sifting through the tariffs seem more alluring. Just less than a thousand people who were canvassed even said they were worried about being on the wrong tariff but hadn’t done anything about it.
