Brits Forking Out Unnecessary Cash On Overseas Credit Card Fees

Do you remember our recent blog post at the end of last month about the Post Office Credit Card waiving travel charges? Well, now the Post Office have released some figures on just how much cash Brits may be throwing away on foreign credit card transactions.

According to the Post Office Credit Card sample survey of over 2,000 people, UK holidaymakers as a whole will fork out over £60 million on unnecessary foreign credit card fees by the end of this year.

A total of £3 billion will be spent on plastic in foreign places by British people on holiday but up to 5 million credit card users are not sure what charges they will incur. That works out at around 2 in 5 people who could come back from holiday being uncertain how much they have been charged for foreign transactions.

Even worse than that, of the 2,000 people canvassed, over 200 didn’t even know that any charges at all would be applied for using their card outside of the UK.

Head of credit cards at the Post Office, Az Alibhai, said: “This summer millions of travellers will waste money on unnecessary fees, and worryingly many are not even aware of how much this will increase their holiday spending. Holidays should be a time to relax and enjoy yourself, but these extra pounds paid every time you make a purchase could result in extra stress when the credit card bill arrives.”

The good news though, if you are looking for a student credit card is that not all cards charge these fees for using a credit card abroad. There are a number of credit cards on the market which carry no fees for using ATMs and making purchases when outside of the UK. The Post Office credit card is just one of the options open to you but different fees and interest rates are important to different users. Try to find some plastic that ticks all of your boxes now on our Student Credit Card Deals page.
