If you have a student credit card or a normal debit card then you will probably have been sent one of those big calculator-type things for online shopping. If you are anything like me then you probably never know where it is. Did you hide it in the sock drawer? Is it under the bed?

If so, you will be pleased to hear that Visa has come up with a hi-tech replacement which you can just keep it in your purse or wallet along with any of your other debit and credit cards.

The new Visa CodeSure is exactly the same size as a credit card and has a built-in keypad and a miniature LCD screen above that bit where you sign your name. Once UK banks take up the new card in the next few months you should be able to throw away the old calculator thingummyjig forever.

Once it is up and running you will simply key in your debit or credit card number at the online store as usual, turn the card over, input your pin number to get the unique password from the screen and then enter that on the website to confirm you are who you claim to be.

Online debit and credit card fraud is still a major problem for banks and customers with losses totalling almost £60 million last year.

The head of innovation at Visa Europe, Sandra Alzetta, says: “CodeSure is an extremely convenient way to bring a similar level of security to payments online as we now enjoy on the high street with chip and pin.”
